Tattoosday: Same Stereotype, Different Day

Yesterday my Instagram feed was filled with a lot of angry reposts of the photo above regarding a segment that aired on Sunrise, an Australian morning show, a few days ago. The topic being discussed was tattooed women and one of the broadcasters didn’t have the kindest things to say. She stated that women will regret any tattoo they get, other people make negative assumptions about tattooed women, and that men don’t find tattooed women attractive.

Everything stated was strictly HER opinion, and while I certainly don’t agree with it, it doesn’t mean that we should take to every social media outlet to spew foul language and hate towards someone that has no influence or value in our lives. Unfortunately that’s exactly what a lot of people did, which just perpetuates this ‘negative’ stereotype.

At this point, I feel like we shouldn’t be surprised or outraged anymore. The tattooed community faces negative comments and stereotypes from all areas of the media each and every day, so getting all fired up is a waste of good energy.  Instead of bashing this woman or the program she works for.. IGNORE IT and go on with your life. By being the best version of yourself and rising above petty comments, you make a statement bigger than anything that can be said on the news.

It’s unfortunate that the show would allow such close minded views to be broadcast, but at the end of the day, they’re just that.. a TELEVISION show which thrives on ratings. By shouting your disagreement and anger from the social media rooftops, it only fuels them to produce more controversial segments like this. As tough as it may be to bite your tongue, it’s absolutely necessary if we ever want to see this stereotype go away.

I encourage you all to follow @astraltravel on Instagram who created the #sun7 post that went viral. She’s focused on fighting tattoo discrimination with positivity rather than negative comments and has some wonderful things to say about having a positive body image.

Be NICE tattooed ladies and gents and prove to close-minded individuals that we are anything but negative!
